Julianne Moore is heading back to the stage. The Academy Award-winning actress will star in Faydra, a new play by Pulitzer Prize finalist Sarah Ruhl, in an Off-Broadway world premiere this winter.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Faydra is a modern retelling of a Greek myth in which Aphrodite aims her arrow at a character named Faydra and makes her fall in love with her own stepson, Hippolytus. Performances begin February 2, 2027, at New York City Center, Stage 1, with opening night set for February 25. Additional casting will be announced later.
Moore is best known for her film work, which includes her Oscar-winning role in Still Alice and parts in Boogie Nights, The Big Lebowski, Far From Heaven, The End of the Affair, The Hours and May December. But her career began in the theater. She appeared on Broadway in 2006 in David Hare's drama The Vertical Hour and participated in a years-long stage workshop of Uncle Vanya with director Andre Gregory, a process that was eventually turned into a film.
Ruhl has written The Clean House, Eurydice, For Peter Pan on Her 70th Birthday and the Tony Award-nominated In the Next Room (or the vibrator play). Both The Clean House and In the Next Room were Pulitzer Prize finalists.
Moore previously worked with director Les Waters on Caryl Churchill's Ice Cream with Hot Fudge at the Public Theater in 1990. Ruhl is also a frequent collaborator with Waters.
Manhattan Theatre Club Artistic Director Nicki Hunter said: "There's nothing like watching a homegrown Manhattan Theatre Club commission become a magnet for talent. Sarah Ruhl's bold, funny, and devastating reimagining of this classic tale will draw the immensely gifted Julianne Moore back to the stage, and mark Les Waters' return to MTC after three decades.
