The first day of D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California brought a heavy slate of Marvel and Star Wars announcements, with the debut trailer for VisionQuest drawing significant attention as the latest entry in a storyline that began with WandaVision.
According to a report by Ars Technica, the event also included the first teaser for Ahsoka Season 2, a public release of Avengers: Doomsday footage previously shown only at San Diego Comic-Con, a sneak peek for Star Wars: Starfighter available only to attendees, casting news for the MCU's X-Men film, and a trailer for an animated special, LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, coming to Disney+ next month.
VisionQuest will complete a trilogy that began with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along. Vision, played by Paul Bettany, died in Avengers: Infinity War, but WandaVision resurrected an all-white version of the character whose memories were restored in that series' finale.
The official premise describes Vision as rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponize him. In hiding and searching for new meaning, he consults AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and Ultron. His quiet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head forces him to run alongside Thomas Shepard, described as a mysterious boy who may be Vision's son, reincarnate.
James Spader returns as Ultron. The character of Thomas Shepard connects directly to a storyline from Agatha All Along, in which a new version of Billy Maximoff tracked down the soul of his twin Tommy, also known as Speed, and placed him into the body of a teenager who had drowned. Ruaridh Mollica has been cast as Tommy/Thomas Shepherd in VisionQuest.
Bettany said last year that the series would explore intergenerational trauma with fathers and sons. That theme aligns with the central relationship between Vision and the mysterious Thomas Shepard, whose exact nature the series appears to treat as a core mystery.
Marvel's streaming output has varied widely in quality and reception. Ars Technica noted that the studio's streaming television portfolio has included standout hits alongside misses and a range of middling offerings, with WandaVision counted among the strongest entries. VisionQuest does not yet have a confirmed release date.
