Las Vegas Startup AirJoule Plans to Pull Drinking Water From Desert Air

A Las Vegas startup is working to pull water directly from desert air, and it is now expanding its testing to include one of the most unlikely heat sources available: data centers.

AirJoule Technologies, based in Las Vegas, has developed technology designed to harvest water from atmospheric moisture even in dry conditions. The company announced a partnership with the Net Zero Innovation Hub, a Canadian organization focused on clean technology development, according to reporting by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Stock Titan.

The company is now planning to test whether waste heat generated by data centers can be used to power its water-harvesting process. Data centers produce large amounts of excess heat as a byproduct of running servers, and AirJoule is exploring whether that heat can be captured and redirected to help extract usable water from the air.

The Las Vegas location is significant. Nevada is one of the driest states in the country, and the Las Vegas valley draws heavily on the Colorado River, a water source under increasing stress from drought and regional demand. A technology that can produce water from air in arid environments could have direct applications in the region.

Atmospheric water generation is not a new concept, but most existing systems work best in humid conditions. AirJoule's approach is aimed at functioning in low-humidity environments, which would expand where the technology could be deployed.

The partnership with the Net Zero Innovation Hub is intended to advance testing and development. The hub focuses on technologies that reduce carbon emissions and improve resource efficiency, and the data center waste heat project fits within that scope by targeting two problems at once: the water needs of dry regions and the heat management challenges facing the data center industry.

Details about the scale of planned tests and a timeline for commercial deployment were not released in the announcements.
