NFL preseason Week 1 is done, and the injury list is already long. Several teams lost key players before the regular season even begins, according to a report by CBS Sports.
The Arizona Cardinals took two hard hits. Jeremiyah Love, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, had a strong debut, rushing for 58 yards on 11 carries and adding three receptions for 14 yards. But he left the game with a high ankle sprain. Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur initially said Love "could have returned" to action, but two days later the team announced Love would not practice or play in Week 2 of the preseason. High ankle sprains can linger, putting his availability for the season opener on September 13 in question.
The news was worse for the team's second-round pick. Chase Bisontis, the No. 34 overall pick out of Texas A&M, tore his MCL in the preseason opener and will miss his entire rookie season. Bisontis had been considered one of the top interior linemen in the draft class, capable of playing both guard and center.
The Minnesota Vikings also absorbed a major blow. Jamal Adams, who signed with Minnesota in late July, tore his quadricep during the team's preseason opener. Head coach Kevin O'Connell announced the injury is season-ending. Adams suffered the same injury during his time with the Seattle Seahawks in 2022, though that was to the opposite leg. O'Connell said Adams is expected to remain with the team during his recovery.
The New York Jets will be without star running back Breece Hall for two to three weeks after he suffered a non-contact groin strain during practice. The injury occurred after Hall made a catch. The Jets expect Hall to be available for Week 1 of the regular season.
In Tennessee, backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky was seen holding his throwing arm after a deep pass attempt during practice on August 17. Head coach Robert Saleh said Trubisky is being evaluated for a biceps injury. Depending on the severity, the situation could give Will Levis more reps with the first team.
The Washington Commanders lost quarterback Marcus Mariota to a sprained MCL. The injury is expected to keep him out for the remainder of the preseason. Houston Texans backup signal-caller Graham Mertz tore his ACL and is also lost for an extended stretch.
In Chicago, running back Monangai suffered a hyperextended knee during a weekend practice. He is expected to miss multiple weeks, though the outlook is considered positive. With Monangai out, D'Andre Swift is likely to carry a heavier workload going forward.
