Nearly a decade after the first Sicario hit theaters, the franchise is coming back. Josh Brolin, who played CIA officer Matt Graver in both Sicario in 2015 and Sicario: Day of the Soldado in 2018, recently confirmed that a third film is on the way.
According to Deadline, Brolin told ScreenRant that production is expected to commence soon on the threequel. He described the project plainly: "Is happening."
The original Sicario was directed by Denis Villeneuve. In that film, Brolin's Graver recruits FBI agent Kate, played by Emily Blunt, to a government task force led by the mysterious Alejandro, played by Benicio Del Toro. The mission centers on hunting down Mexican cartel bosses in the escalating war against drugs. The second film, directed by Stefano Sollima, featured Isabela Merced stepping in during Blunt's absence.
Together, the two films have surpassed $160 million globally.
Writer Taylor Sheridan has been busy in the years between Sicario projects. Since Day of the Soldado, Sheridan has developed and run the Yellowstone franchise, which now includes spin-off series Dutton Ranch and Marshals. He has also produced standalone shows including Landman, The Madison, Lioness, Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown.
No director or full cast has been publicly announced for Sicario 3. Brolin's confirmation that the film is happening puts the project firmly back in public view after years with little official word.
