Dave Bautista has gained 20 pounds while preparing to play Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming live-action adaptation of God of War. The 57-year-old actor revealed his physical transformation on social media over the weekend, announcing that he now weighs 250 pounds after approximately two months of training.

The former WWE champion shared an Instagram Story on November 1 showing his noticeably larger physique while wearing a God of War T-shirt. He flexed his arms for the camera and included a message confirming that he had gained 20 pounds for the role.

The transformation marks another major change in Bautista’s appearance after he previously lost considerable weight while focusing on his acting career. His latest training efforts are intended to help him portray Kratos, the muscular Spartan warrior at the center of Sony’s popular PlayStation franchise.

Bautista Shows Off His Physical Transformation

Bautista has been documenting his return to weight training since September. At the beginning of that month, he shared an earlier progress video explaining that he was three weeks into his training program and had approximately two months remaining to reach his target.

His newest update suggests he has made substantial progress toward that goal. According to People, Bautista reported gaining 20 pounds in roughly two months, bringing his current weight to 250 pounds.

The actor has extensive experience with bodybuilding and strength training from his professional wrestling career. During his years with WWE, where he performed under the name Batista, he was known for his imposing physique and powerful wrestling style.

However, Bautista has deliberately changed his appearance several times since becoming a full-time actor. His previous weight loss attracted attention in 2024 when he appeared noticeably slimmer than he had during his wrestling career.

The actor previously explained that he had become uncomfortable with his size after gaining considerable weight for the 2023 psychological thriller Knock at the Cabin. He subsequently adopted a different approach to exercise and nutrition, incorporating activities such as jiu-jitsu while reducing his overall body weight.

His latest transformation reverses part of that change, although his reported 250-pound weight remains below the size he reached during his heaviest years. It also reflects the physical demands associated with portraying one of gaming’s most recognizable characters.

Ryan Hurst’s Injury Led to the Casting Change

Bautista was officially confirmed as Kratos in August 2026, replacing actor Ryan Hurst after a serious injury disrupted production. Hurst had originally been cast as the character in January and had already filmed material for the series.

The production encountered a major setback in June when Hurst suffered a torn bicep while performing a stunt. The injury required surgery and created uncertainty about when he could safely return to filming.

According to Variety, waiting for Hurst to recover would have delayed production into 2027. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television consequently decided to recast the central role rather than extend the interruption.

Bautista emerged as the replacement and secured the part in August. His background as a professional wrestler and action-film actor made him a candidate for the physically demanding character.

The decision also created additional work for the production team because Hurst had already completed scenes for four episodes. Those scenes will need to be filmed again with Bautista playing Kratos.

The change was particularly notable because Hurst already had a connection to the God of War franchise. He provided the voice and motion-capture performance for Thor in the 2022 video game God of War Ragnarök.

Although Hurst will no longer portray Kratos in the television adaptation, his previous contribution remains part of the gaming franchise. Bautista now carries responsibility for introducing the character to television audiences.

What Prime Video’s God of War Series Will Explore

The upcoming television series will focus on the story introduced in the 2018 God of War game and continued in God of War Ragnarök. Unlike the franchise’s earlier installments, which concentrated heavily on Greek mythology, these games place Kratos in a world inspired by Norse mythology.

The story follows Kratos and his young son Atreus as they travel through dangerous lands filled with gods, monsters and supernatural threats. Their initial mission is to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, fulfilling her final wish.

The relationship between father and son forms the emotional foundation of the adaptation. Kratos struggles to teach Atreus responsibility and restraint while confronting his own violent history.

Atreus, meanwhile, challenges his father’s harsh approach to life and encourages him to become more understanding. Their developing relationship is expected to remain central to the television series.

Callum Vinson has been cast as Atreus, joining Bautista in the two leading roles. The younger character plays a major part in the franchise’s mythology and becomes increasingly important as the story develops.

The adaptation will also introduce several familiar figures from the Norse pantheon. Mandy Patinkin will portray Odin, while Ólafur Darri Ólafsson has been cast as Thor.

Other confirmed cast members include Max Parker as Heimdall, Ed Skrein as Baldur and Alastair Duncan as Mimir. Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka will portray the dwarven brothers Brok and Sindri, who provide weapons and equipment to Kratos throughout his adventures.

Teresa Palmer is also attached to the series as Sif. The combination of established performers and younger actors gives the adaptation a large ensemble suited to the franchise’s extensive mythology.

Ronald D. Moore Leads the Television Adaptation

Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, executive producer and showrunner for the God of War series. Moore is known for his work on Battlestar Galactica, Outlander and several Star Trek television productions.

His involvement places an experienced science-fiction and fantasy television producer in charge of adapting the games. The project is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

Frederick E. O. Toye is directing the first two episodes. His previous television credits include Shōgun, Fallout and The Boys, giving him experience with elaborate action sequences and effects-heavy productions.

Prime Video has already ordered two seasons of the adaptation, with plans to film them back-to-back. The commitment provides the production team with an opportunity to develop Kratos and Atreus’ journey across an extended story.

Filming originally began in Vancouver in February 2026 before Hurst’s injury disrupted the schedule. Although production had been expected to resume during the fall, a confirmed restart date has not been established in the latest reports.

The production interruption and necessary reshoots have added uncertainty to the release schedule. Prime Video has not announced an official premiere date.

Bautista’s Career Prepares Him for the Role

Bautista gained widespread recognition as Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films. His performance combined physical comedy with action sequences, helping establish his career beyond professional wrestling.

He later appeared in Blade Runner 2049, Dune, Dune: Part Two and Knock at the Cabin. Those projects demonstrated his interest in roles extending beyond the action-heavy characters associated with his wrestling background.

Playing Kratos represents a return to a more physically imposing character, but the role also involves considerable dramatic responsibility. The character is defined by his difficult relationship with his son and his struggle to move beyond the violence of his past.

Bautista’s latest weight gain demonstrates his preparation for the character’s appearance, although the performance itself will depend on how he handles those emotional elements. The series will require him to portray both an intimidating warrior and a father learning to communicate with his child.

His November 1 update provides the clearest recent indication of his physical preparation. The next major development will be the resumption of filming and the release of official footage showing Bautista as Kratos.
