Neve Campbell has confirmed that she will return as Sidney Prescott in Scream 8, extending her involvement in the horror franchise that made her one of cinema’s most recognizable survivors. The actress revealed her plans during a recent interview connected to the second season of Netflix’s Black Doves, marking the clearest confirmation yet of her participation in the upcoming sequel.

Campbell made the announcement while discussing projects she has lined up. When the conversation turned to the eighth Scream film, she responded with a laugh, saying, “I'll be in it.”

The confirmation follows the commercial success of Scream 7, which brought Campbell back to the franchise after she missed the sixth installment. The latest sequel is being developed by Spyglass Media, with screenwriters Lilla and Nora Zuckerman attached to write the screenplay.

Although Campbell has confirmed her involvement, important details remain undecided or undisclosed. A director has not been publicly announced, and the film does not yet have an official release date.

Sidney Prescott Returns After Scream 7 Success

Campbell first portrayed Sidney Prescott in the original Scream, released in December 1996. Directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson, the movie introduced a new approach to slasher horror by combining suspense, violence and characters who understood the rules of horror films.

Sidney became the central survivor of a series of attacks by killers wearing the Ghostface mask. Campbell returned for the next three installments and later reprised the character in the fifth film, released in 2022.

Her absence from Scream VI in 2023 marked a significant change for the franchise. Campbell publicly explained that she had declined to participate because the salary offer did not reflect what she believed she had contributed to the series.

The disagreement attracted attention from fans and other performers who supported her decision. Despite the absence of Sidney, Scream VI continued the story with a younger group of survivors led by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega.

Campbell eventually reached an agreement to return for Scream 7, which opened in theaters on February 27, 2026. The film moved Sidney back to the center of the story and introduced a new threat against her family.

The seventh installment followed Sidney, now living under the married name Sidney Evans, as she tried to maintain a peaceful life in Indiana. Her husband and teenage daughter became involved in another Ghostface attack, forcing Sidney to confront the violence she had spent years trying to escape.

Isabel May played Sidney’s daughter Tatum, a character named after Sidney’s best friend from the original film. Their relationship introduced a new family dynamic that could provide material for another installment.

Scream 7 Becomes the Franchise’s Biggest Box-Office Hit

The commercial performance of Scream 7 helped establish a strong financial case for continuing the series. The film opened with approximately $97.2 million worldwide, setting a franchise record for a global debut.

It eventually passed $200 million, becoming the highest-grossing installment in the franchise’s 30-year history. According to box-office tracking service The Numbers, its worldwide theatrical earnings reached approximately $213.8 million.

That total compares with a reported production budget of $45 million. The budget figure does not include every marketing or distribution expense, so the difference between box-office revenue and production costs should not be treated as net profit.

Paramount Pictures celebrated the milestone in March, noting that the film had become the first Scream installment to cross $200 million globally. Its performance demonstrated that the franchise could still attract substantial theatrical audiences three decades after the original movie.

Critical reaction was less enthusiastic than the box-office results. Reviews were mixed, with some critics welcoming Campbell’s return while others questioned the film’s approach to its established characters and familiar slasher formula.

The financial success nevertheless encouraged further development. By the end of March, reports confirmed that Spyglass had begun moving forward with an eighth installment.

Poker Face Writers Take Over the Screenplay

Lilla and Nora Zuckerman have been selected to write Scream 8. The sisters are known for their work as showrunners on the Peacock mystery series Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne.

Their television credits also include Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Suits, Fringe and Prodigal Son. Their experience with mysteries and character-driven storytelling could prove useful for a franchise built around secret identities and elaborate murder investigations.

TheWrap reported their involvement on March 31, confirming that Spyglass was developing the next movie. The announcement established the project’s writing team several months before Campbell publicly confirmed her return.

Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original Scream and directed Scream 7, has indicated that he does not intend to direct the eighth film. He has expressed interest in allowing another filmmaker to take charge while remaining connected to the franchise.

Williamson and Campbell had already discussed possible ideas for a sequel before Scream 7 reached theaters. During the seventh film’s promotional campaign, Williamson said Campbell had suggested a story direction that generated interest among those involved.

The specific idea has not been publicly explained. It is also unclear whether the Zuckerman sisters will incorporate that concept into their screenplay.

Could Sidney’s Daughter Become More Important?

One possible direction involves the relationship between Sidney and Tatum, which played a major part in Scream 7. The seventh film explored how Sidney’s experiences with Ghostface affected her ability to raise a daughter while keeping her violent past at a distance.

Tatum represents a younger generation that has grown up with the consequences of Sidney’s history. Continuing that relationship would allow the writers to explore how surviving repeated attacks changes a family over time.

However, no official plot synopsis has been released for Scream 8. The return of Tatum or any particular storyline remains unconfirmed until the filmmakers or studio provide additional information.

Other characters could also return, but casting announcements have not established the full ensemble. Courteney Cox, who plays reporter Gale Weathers, remains one of the franchise’s most familiar performers after appearing throughout the seven-film series.

Matthew Lillard’s involvement has also encouraged speculation about Stu Macher, one of the killers in the original film. Lillard appeared in Scream 7, but theories about Stu surviving the events of the 1996 movie should not be confused with confirmed plans for another sequel.

Patrick Dempsey’s character Mark Kincaid is another potential connection to Sidney’s history. The character first appeared in Scream 3, but Dempsey has not been confirmed for the eighth movie.

Neve Campbell Also Joins Black Doves Season Two

Campbell’s announcement came as she was promoting another major television project. She has joined the cast of Black Doves, Netflix’s British spy thriller starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw.

The second season premieres November 5, 2026, with Campbell playing Cecile Mason. Netflix has confirmed her participation alongside several other new cast members, including Ambika Mod, Babou Ceesay and Sam Riley.

The series follows Helen, played by Knightley, a woman secretly working for an intelligence organization while navigating political and personal dangers. Its second season continues the story as her husband approaches a position of greater political power.

Campbell’s appearance gives her another prominent television role while she prepares to revisit Sidney Prescott. She has also appeared in The Lincoln Lawyer, House of Cards and the original Party of Five.

Her return to Scream carries particular significance because the character has remained closely associated with her career for three decades. Sidney was introduced as a teenager fighting to survive and has since become a mother protecting her family from similar dangers.

For now, Campbell’s confirmation establishes one major part of the next film’s casting. The next important announcements will concern the director, additional performers, production schedule and release date as Spyglass continues developing Scream 8.
