Two people were killed and three others hospitalized Tuesday morning after a shooting at a shopping plaza in Carrollton, Texas, a city about 20 miles north of Dallas known for one of the region's most prominent Korean American communities.
Officers responded just before 10 a.m. to reports of gunfire at K Towne Plaza in the 4000 block of Highway 121, Carrollton Police Chief Roberto Arredondo said at an afternoon news conference. When they arrived, they found five victims. Two were pronounced dead at the scene. Three others were transported to the hospital. Their names have not been released.
The suspect, 69-year-old Seung Han Ho, was arrested following a short foot chase. Undercover officers located his vehicle and attempted to make contact, at which point Ho fled on foot. He was taken into custody in the area of 2625 Old Denton Road.
Arredondo said the shooting was not a random act. "We don't know exactly what the meeting was about, but we understand it to be a business relation," he said. The shooting began, police said, as a business meeting.
Video posted online showed officers with guns drawn walking past doors at K Towne Plaza. Agents from the FBI and at least one other federal agency were among the law enforcement response, which involved multiple agencies including Carrollton Police and the Texas Department of Public Safety. A CBS News helicopter captured the scene from the air.
Carrollton has grown into a hub for the Dallas-area Korean American community over the past two decades. More than 4,000 residents of Korean descent live in the city of 130,000, according to U.S. Census data. The Koreatown area is anchored by businesses including the H-Mart supermarket and dozens of Korean restaurants.
Ho's formal charges had not been announced as of Tuesday afternoon. The investigation remains ongoing.
