Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma each made their 278th appearance in the Indian Premier League on Sunday, drawing level with MS Dhoni's all-time record for most matches played in IPL history, according to Yahoo Sports.
The milestone came during a thrilling contest between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur, which RCB won in a dramatic last-ball finish.
Dhoni, who remains part of Chennai Super Kings's 2026 squad but has not featured in a match this season, set the record across a career spanning from 2008 to 2025. He represented both CSK and Rising Pune Supergiant during that time.
Kohli's achievement carries a particular distinction. He has played all 278 of his IPL matches for a single franchise, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, since the tournament's inaugural season in 2008. Rohit reached the same number having represented two teams, starting his career with Deccan Chargers between 2008 and 2010 before joining Mumbai Indians, where he became one of the most successful captains in the tournament's history.
On the field, Bhuvneshwar Kumar starred with the ball for RCB, finishing with figures of 4/23, while Tilak Varma top-scored for Mumbai Indians with a half-century. RCB's chase was revived by a counterattacking innings from Krunal Pandya before Bengaluru sealed victory in the final over.
