Antoine Semenyo scored the only goal of the FA Cup final as Manchester City defeated Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley on Saturday, backheeling past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez in what will likely be remembered as one of the more memorable moments of the English football season.
The goal was Semenyo's 10th in all competitions since joining City from Bournemouth in the January transfer window, a number that places him in rare company. According to a report by Yahoo Sports, Semenyo has become only the second player in history to score 10 or more goals for two different Premier League clubs in the same season. Before his winter move, he had also scored 10 goals for Bournemouth.
The only other player to reach that mark was Andy Cole, who scored 15 times for Newcastle United before his £7 million transfer to Manchester United in the 1994/95 season, after which he added 12 goals across all competitions. Cole's feat stood alone for 31 years before Semenyo matched it with his Wembley winner.
The goal was also Semenyo's 20th of the season across all competitions, which gave him another record. He is now the Ghanaian player with the most goals in a single Premier League campaign. The previous record had belonged to Tony Yeboah, who scored 19 times for Leeds United in the 1995/96 season. Yeboah's record stood for three decades before Saturday's final.
Semenyo made the move to City from Bournemouth in January under manager Pep Guardiola, and the winger has wasted little time making an impact. His 10 goals in the second half of the season for a club competing on multiple fronts represents a strong return for a player who only joined in the middle of the campaign.
Chelsea, who had been aiming for a trophy of their own, were unable to find a response to Semenyo's backheel finish. The match ended 1-0, with Manchester City claiming the FA Cup title.
