Vibrant Emotional Health will continue serving as the national administrator of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, the organization announced, according to a press release distributed by PR Newswire.
The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is a federally designated service that connects people in mental health crisis with trained counselors through calls, texts, and chat. The three-digit number, 988, was launched in July 2022 to replace the previous ten-digit National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number and was intended to make crisis support easier to access.
Vibrant Emotional Health, a New York-based nonprofit, has administered the lifeline network since its earlier iteration as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The organization oversees a network of more than 200 local and state crisis centers across the United States that answer contacts routed through the 988 system.
Since the transition to the three-digit format, the volume of contacts to the lifeline has grown substantially. The simplified number was designed specifically to reduce barriers to reaching out during a mental health crisis, and usage data from the years following the 2022 launch showed significant increases in calls, texts, and chats compared to prior years under the longer number.
The continuation of Vibrant Emotional Health in the administrator role means the existing network structure and the relationships between the national organization and local crisis centers will remain in place. Local centers are a central part of how the system functions, as most contacts are answered at the local or state level before being routed to a national backup network if local lines are busy.
Mental health advocates have pointed to the 988 system as a critical resource, particularly as demand for crisis services has grown in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic. The lifeline serves people experiencing suicidal thoughts, substance use crises, and other mental health emergencies, and it also has specialized networks for veterans, LGBTQ+ youth, and Spanish-speaking callers.
Vibrant Emotional Health's continued role provides stability for a system that relies on coordination between federal funders, the national administrator, and hundreds of local organizations. The announcement confirms that structure will remain intact as the lifeline continues operating.
