Mississippi State entered the SEC Tournament quarterfinals on May 21 with a chance to show it could beat an elite team. Georgia, the No. 1 seed, answered with a 5-3 win at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Alabama, sending the Bulldogs home.

The loss left Mississippi State at 9-14 in Quad 1 games, the category of matchups against the strongest opponents. Four of those nine wins came against Ole Miss. Against everyone else in the top tier, the Bulldogs are 5-10. In Quad 2 through Quad 4 games, they are 31-3, according to a report by The Clarion Ledger published by Yahoo Sports.

Coach Brian O'Connor addressed the team's confidence after the loss. "Their spirits are up," he said. "Obviously they're disappointed about today. But they really, really believe in each other. And I feel like this team has the skill and want-to to play for a long time."

The Quad 1 struggles are not new. Mississippi State's final three regular season series were all against Quad 1 opponents: at Texas, home against Auburn, and at Texas A&M. The Bulldogs lost all three series. They were run-ruled only once during that stretch, on May 9 against Auburn. Six of their 14 Quad 1 losses came by one run, and three more came by two runs.

Designated hitter Noah Sullivan kept the tone measured after the Georgia loss. "We're playing well," he said. "We're all excited. We want to play at home, and hopefully that does happen. But I mean, this game, it is what it is. We didn't do enough on both sides, and it just is what it is. We'll move forward, get back to work and see what happens."

Despite the elimination, O'Connor said he believes Mississippi State will be selected as one of the 16 teams to host an NCAA Tournament regional. Before the Georgia loss, D1Baseball had projected Mississippi State as the No. 14 national seed, and Baseball America had the Bulldogs at No. 13. MSU has not hosted a regional since 2021, the year the program won its only national championship.

"I hope on Sunday the committee feels that we are worthy of that," O'Connor said. "I know our fan base and the community of Starkville will do an incredible job hosting a regional welcoming the other teams. And I believe this team has earned the right to be able to do that."

The regional hosts will be announced May 24, with the full bracket revealed May 25. O'Connor was direct about what needs to change once the tournament begins. "We're right there," he said. "We just need to be a little bit better starting next weekend in those tight ball games."
