West Ham issued a formal warning to supporters this week after a chant directed at winger Manor Solomon was heard during the club's first match of the season.
The club said it was aware that some away supporters sang the chant during last Sunday's 2-2 draw at Burnley's Turf Moor stadium, according to a report by Yahoo Sports. West Ham described the chant as "offensive and divisive" and said it contained an "anti-Palestine message."
In a statement, the club said it wanted to "remind supporters of the responsibility we all hold to represent the club in the right way" and that "each and every supporter is an ambassador."
The statement also addressed the broader environment the club wants supporters to experience. West Ham said: "Regardless of their background, every supporter within our diverse fanbase should also be free to enjoy watching their team play football without fear, discrimination or abuse. And we remain committed to ensuring that everyone feels safe, respected and included."
The club did not close the door on vocal support altogether. It added: "We encourage our supporters to sing loud and proud about their football club and the players wearing the claret and blue shirt -- but never in a way that creates division or causes offence among fellow fans."
Solomon, 27, is an Israel international who has earned 49 caps for his country. West Ham signed him from Tottenham ahead of this season. Before that, he played for Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine, had a loan spell at Fulham, and was part of the Leeds squad that won the Championship to earn promotion to the Premier League in the 2024-25 season.
West Ham did not announce any supporter sanctions in connection with the chant.
