A fight was proposed on the floor of Madison Square Garden, and now it is becoming a reality on the South Lawn of the White House.
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, the idea for UFC Freedom 250 was born on November 16, 2024, during UFC 309 at New York's Madison Square Garden. President-elect Donald Trump attended the event alongside Elon Musk, Kid Rock, and incoming cabinet secretaries Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard. When Trump left, he walked out alongside UFC CEO Dana White.
"He leaned over to me and says, 'we should do a fight at the White House,'" White recalled in an interview. "I said 'yes, we should.' I didn't know what he meant … I was thinking maybe there's some room that he's thinking about where we'd have it. He's like, 'no, we're gonna do it outside on the South Lawn.'"
White's chief content officer, Craig Borsari, was skeptical at first. "When [White] initially mentioned the idea of putting on a UFC event on the South Lawn of the White House, I truly did not believe him. I thought he was kidding," Borsari said. White pushed back on the notion that Trump was anything less than serious. "He's funny, but he's not a joke around kind of guy," White said. "Literally, when he says something, consider it done."
The event is set for June 14. A custom-built arena will be constructed on the South Lawn, and UFC parent company TKO Group Holdings is covering all costs, from building the temporary structure to replacing the grass after the event concludes. TKO, led by CEO Ari Emanuel, is betting on what it calls "Super Bowl-level" media exposure.
The event is also a defining moment for TKO's $7.7 billion deal with Paramount Skydance, led by CEO David Ellison. UFC Freedom 250 will stream on Paramount+.
The audience is expected to include some of the most powerful figures in the world. White House spokesman Davis Ingle offered an expansive statement on the event. "This will be one of the greatest and most historic sports events in history, and President Trump hosting it at the White House is a testament to his vision to celebrate America's monumental 250th anniversary," Ingle said.
The total cost to TKO has been reported at $60 million. Despite the spectacle, the report notes the event is a significant financial gamble for everyone involved, given its high profile and the direct alignment of a combat sport with the Trump White House.
