Collin Gillespie is staying in Phoenix. The guard intends to sign a four-year, $48 million contract to remain with the Suns, according to ESPN's Shams Charania and reporting from Yahoo Sports.
The deal comes after a breakout season in which Gillespie averaged 12.7 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game while shooting 40.1% from three-point range. He also set the Suns franchise record for three-pointers made in a single season with 232.
Gillespie spent his previous time in Phoenix on a minimum contract after a couple of seasons on two-way deals. The new contract represents a significant jump in pay and secures him as a core piece of the Suns rotation going forward.
The NBA's new collective bargaining agreement allows teams to negotiate with their own free agents before the official start of free agency on June 30. The Suns used that window to lock Gillespie up before other teams could make offers.
Phoenix was $17.5 million below the luxury tax line before agreeing to the new deal, leaving the team some financial flexibility to add other players without crossing that threshold.
