Fresh talks between the United States and Iran are scheduled for Tuesday in Doha, Qatar, following a weekend of military strikes that threatened to collapse ongoing negotiations between the two countries.

President Donald Trump announced the meeting Monday via his Truth Social account. "IRAN HAS REQUESTED A MEETING. IT WILL TAKE PLACE TOMORROW IN DOHA!," Trump wrote.

According to CNBC, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the meeting and said special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would travel to Qatar for the talks.

The meeting follows a series of exchanges over the weekend in which the U.S. struck Iranian military targets in response to Tehran's attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The strait, located between Oman and Iran, handles roughly 20 percent of the world's oil traffic and is considered one of the most critical energy chokepoints on the planet.

Leavitt addressed the status of the ceasefire directly. "As far as we're concerned, we're holding up our end of the ceasefire. Violence will be met with violence," she said. She added that a memorandum of understanding between the two sides would continue to be discussed. "The ceasefire is in place, and we hope that we can get to a good deal," she said.

A U.S. official told CNBC on Sunday that both sides had agreed to stand down temporarily. "Technical talks are slated to continue on all areas of the MOU," the official said. "Both sides will stand down for now and vessels can move freely."

On Sunday, Trump posted a sharp warning to Iran on Truth Social after the weekend clashes. "There may come a point when we are no longer able to be reasonable, and will be forced to militarily complete the job that we very successfully started. If that happens, the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist!" he wrote.

There was no immediate public response from Tehran. CNBC said it had contacted Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was awaiting a reply.

Trump separately noted on Monday that U.S. crude oil prices had fallen to levels last seen before what he described as the start of the Iran war on Feb. 28, welcoming the decline in oil and gas prices.

The Doha meeting is scheduled for Tuesday.
