A 23-year-old from Cape Verde scored one of the most celebrated goals of the World Cup on Friday, then ran into the stands to celebrate with his family for several minutes without receiving a yellow card, despite rules that clearly prohibit it.
Sidney Lopes Cabral's curling extra-time strike from the edge of the penalty area beat Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in the 103rd minute, tying the Round of 32 clash at 2-2. Cape Verde had come in as heavy underdogs against the defending World Cup champions.
According to Yahoo Sports, the International Football Association Board clearly states that any form of excessively celebrating a goal warrants a yellow card. The law lists going into the crowd as a specific example of what constitutes a bookable offense. Lopes Cabral went into the crowd and stayed there for several minutes, but no card was issued.
"Sidny Lopes Cabral, what a goal," BBC announcer Aly McCoist said on the call. "Oh wow, he opens his body up and smashes it into the top corner, honestly. That was a different class."
The moment was among the most striking of Cape Verde's run in the tournament. The team had already drawn against Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia in the group stage. With the score level at 2-2 and Argentina on the ropes, Cape Verde was within 20 minutes of forcing a penalty shootout.
The match ended when Argentina center-back Christian Romero's header in the 111th minute deflected off Cape Verde's Diney Borges for the decisive own goal. Despite the loss, Lopes Cabral's strike and celebration seized the spotlight.
He is one of the more prominent players on the Cape Verde squad. He represented Benfica in the Primera League last season before a transfer to Trabzonspor worth ā¬10 million, approximately $11.44 million.
Former England striker Ian Wright, speaking on ITV, described the team's effort across the tournament as Herculean.
"That's what you're ideally hoping will happen around the world and this is why Fifa have to do so much to make sure the funds they get do reach everybody," Wright said. "What this does show people is that when you give people the opportunity, they can get onto the biggest stage, no matter how small they are, and they can have it with the world champions, with one of the greatest players in the world. It was a Herculean effort from them, absolutely."
The match was also notable for a TikTok-famous dog spotted in the stands wearing headphones, which drew attention from fans watching online.
Argentina will face Egypt in the Round of 16 on Tuesday. Egypt defeated Australia on penalties earlier Friday.
