The Pitt received 25 Emmy nominations Wednesday, the most of any show this year, as production on the HBO Max drama's third season was already underway. Star Noah Wyle learned the news alongside his co-stars and crew from creator R. Scott Gemmill during a break on set.
According to Deadline, Wyle received two of those nominations himself: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, which would be his second nomination in that category after winning it last year, and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for the episode titled "12:00 p.m." Across his entire career, he has now received 10 Emmy nominations and two wins.
"This just feels very much like a gift that keeps on giving," Wyle told Deadline Wednesday morning. "I feel very humbled by this and validated many times over. Today, I feel extremely gratified that the nominations were spread so far and wide across our casting. It really feels like it's a testament to the collective achievement and contribution that everybody makes."
The nominations went well beyond Wyle. The Pitt also drew recognition in Outstanding Actor/Actress, Supporting Actor/Actress, and Guest Actor/Actress categories, along with nominations for writers, editors, directors, casting, and makeup. Wyle took time to acknowledge those who were not nominated as well, specifically calling out the show's director of photography.
"It is such a collective effort that it's really hard to parse it out into individual contributions," he said. "It feels a little disingenuous to be one of the only people standing up there on a stage accepting a trophy on behalf of Stage 22 and Stage 21, and all the people that work there. The fact that Jojo Coelho, our DP, was not nominated, I think, was significant because she's such a huge part of our show and is part of every single one of those nominations because her work is so spectacular."
IndieWire noted that The Pitt's nomination haul gives HBO Max a significant awards narrative this cycle. The streaming service now claims both the most nominated drama in The Pitt and the most nominated comedy in Hacks, pointing to what the outlet called a "broader sensibility" that has helped HBO Max establish a clearer identity in the industry.
The Pitt was not the only reality or prestige television story in the nominations. After 10 seasons on Bravo, Summer House earned its first-ever Emmy nomination, landing in the Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program category. Executive producer Steven Weinstock called the recognition a milestone for the show and for Truly Original, the production company behind it.
"We're really excited that the audience really connected with [the show]," Weinstock told Deadline. "We're gratified that we were given this attention."
Weinstock credited the team at Truly Original and Bravo as the people "responsible for the storytelling," describing it as the element most important to the production. Season 10 was particularly turbulent, as co-stars Amanda Batula and West Wilson confirmed they were in a relationship after weeks of denying rumors. The show had already wrapped filming for the summer when the story broke publicly, forcing producers to go back and capture additional footage to explain how the relationship developed.
"We had to capture the backstory and the context of why it happened. It wasn't black and white. It was very nuanced, and it required a lot of sophisticated storyline on the part of folks at Truly Original as well as the support we got from Bravo in terms of being able to do that," Weinstock said.
The tension carried into the Season 10 reunion, which Weinstock said he knew going in "was going to be heated and explosive." The show also produced a bonus episode, Summer House: Aftermath, to give viewers additional closure after the reunion aired.
Weinstock also teased what is coming in Season 11, telling Deadline there are "some new people joining the cast."
As for The Pitt's third season, Wyle indicated the new episodes will reflect the current state of American healthcare directly. He said the season will highlight "how desperate this particular moment in time is," though he did not elaborate further during the interview. No premiere date for Season 3 has been announced.
