Three people were killed and seven others injured in a shooting outside an In-N-Out Burger restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, over the weekend, and the suspect died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to ABC News.
The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Chad Williams, opened fire near a busy shopping area on Saturday. An In-N-Out employee was among those killed, the company confirmed. Some of the seven injured were listed in critical condition.
An armed off-duty Idaho state trooper and a private citizen confronted Williams during the attack. Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said that confrontation likely drove Williams from the scene and prevented additional casualties.
The Twin Falls Police Department said investigators are "confident" Williams acted alone. A motive has not been established. Hicks said Williams's family members are cooperating with the investigation.
Williams attended the College of Southern Idaho in 2022 and 2023 but did not graduate. A college spokesperson confirmed to ABC News that he served as a senator in the school's student government until he was impeached from that role in February 2023.
Elijah Moseley, who served on the student government at the same time, told ABC affiliate KIVI that the impeachment was "procedural" and that they were freeing up a seat for someone who was more engaged. Moseley said he and Williams fell out of contact in the years since and called the news of the shooting "shocking."
The FBI said it was aware of the shooting and offered assistance to local law enforcement. The agency also asked the public to submit any video, audio, or still images that may have captured the incident. Police were still interviewing witnesses and asked anyone with additional information to come forward.
