Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $42 million on Tuesday, setting the record for the biggest Tuesday in domestic box office history. The figure surpasses the previous Tuesday record held by Spider-Man: Far From Home, which earned $39.2 million on July 2, 2019. Both records belong to Sony Pictures.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film had already set the record for highest-grossing Monday domestically before the Tuesday number came in. It also became the fastest feature to hit $400 million domestically, doing so in just four days, bringing its North American total to $449 million as of Tuesday morning.
The film's opening weekend was a close race with 2019's Avengers: Endgame for the biggest domestic opening weekend ever. Sony confirmed Monday morning that Brand New Day prevailed with $360 million, edging out Endgame's $357.1 million domestic start. Endgame's $1.2 billion global launch still holds the record for worldwide opening weekend. Brand New Day became the second-fastest feature to cross the billion-dollar mark when Sony announced Tuesday morning it had reached that threshold in six days.
The film also set records for the biggest Thursday previews and the top Friday opening domestic sum, in addition to becoming Sony's best-ever launch.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously made Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, helmed the project. The cast includes Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo alongside stars Tom Holland and Zendaya. The story centers on Marvel's signature hero living a lonely life without his loved ones before an invisible enemy tracks him down.
Brand New Day holds a 90 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. THR chief film critic David Rooney praised "a never-better Tom Holland" in his review.
When asked about the film's performance given apparent superhero fatigue affecting other recent titles, Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman told The Hollywood Reporter, "The press talks a lot about that, but right now, on anything, the theatrical audience demands greatness. If it's only OK, they can stay home and see 'only OK' all day long on television. If we're going to ask them make a trip out of it, it's got to be great. The answer is as simple as that."
The film's success comes at a time when other superhero titles have struggled. Last month's Supergirl was among those that underperformed at the box office. Brand New Day's second weekend will face new competition from wide releases including One Night Only, Super Troopers 3, and Ice Cream Man.
Meanwhile, Spider-Noir, the separate Prime Video series starring Nicolas Cage as an older web-slinging private investigator set in the 1930s, is also performing well on streaming. Nearly three months after its release, the show sits at number six on Prime Video's Top 10 TV shows worldwide. The series earned a 92 percent critics' score and a 90 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. No second season has been confirmed.
