Luigi Mangione, accused in the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is expected to plead guilty in his New York federal case, according to reporting by NBC News and CBS News.

Mangione faces federal stalking charges in connection with the case. Sources told CBS News that he has been in discussions about a possible plea deal on those federal charges. NBC News reported that a guilty plea is expected in the federal court proceeding.

Lawyers following the case have noted that the timing of any federal plea could carry significant consequences for the separate state murder case Mangione also faces in New York. If Mangione pleads guilty in federal court, what happens next in the state case remains a central question for legal observers tracking the proceedings.

Thompson was killed in 2024 in a case that drew widespread national attention. Mangione was arrested shortly after and has been held since. His federal court hearing has now raised the direct prospect of a plea, with the outcome expected to affect both the federal and state proceedings against him.
