Paris Saint-Germain signed Ferran Torres from Barcelona on Saturday, adding the Spanish World Cup winner to an attack that already includes Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembélé. The French club announced the signing without revealing financial details, but sports outlet L'Equipe reported the fee was 50 million euros, or approximately $58 million. Torres will wear the No. 9 jersey and signed a five-year contract.
Torres, 26, scored Spain's winning goal in extra time of the World Cup final against Argentina, coming on as a second-half substitute and driving a left-foot shot under the crossbar. It was his only goal of the tournament. He said the goal was "scored by 47 million people," a reference to Spain's population.
According to ABC News, Torres netted 65 goals in 207 games for Barcelona, including a career-high 21 across all competitions last season. He is described as more of a roaming forward than a prolific scorer. His contract with Barcelona was set to expire next year, and the club reportedly would have had to pay a fee to Manchester City if he extended it.
The move is Torres's second major transfer. Barcelona had signed him from Manchester City in January 2022 for a reported 55 million euros. Before joining City in 2020, he played for Valencia.
The transfer reunites Torres with PSG manager Luis Enrique, who gave Torres his international debut with Spain in 2020. Luis Enrique took charge at PSG in 2023 and has led the club to back-to-back Champions League titles and the French league title in each of his three seasons. PSG also claimed the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa, making them the first team to win back-to-back Super Cup titles since Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017.
Torres will join an already deep attacking group that includes Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Bradley Barcola, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and new signing Maghnes Akliouche. PSG faces French Cup winner Lens on Sunday in the Trophées des Champions.
