Vin Diesel has confirmed that Fast Forever, the final film in the Fast and Furious franchise, is scheduled to begin filming in December of this year. He made the announcement while speaking with Variety during the official 25th anniversary screening of The Fast and the Furious.

The film will serve as the conclusion to the story set up at the end of Fast X. Director Louis Leterrier is returning to helm the project, with a screenplay written by Michael Lesslie. The movie is currently set for a March 17, 2028 release date.

Diesel was candid about how difficult it was to get the script to a place he felt was worthy of closing out the franchise. He said the project went through four different writers across four years of development before arriving at a draft that satisfied him.

"We start shooting in December, if I can make good on the request from the studio," Diesel said. "I'm in a good place, though. I had to go through four sets of writers, four years of development, to get to something that I felt would be worthy of a finale. And when I read the script a couple of weeks ago, [I cried]."

Diesel went into further detail about the emotional experience of reading the completed script. "It was after four different writers, four years of development, and after I read the script, halfway through, one tear. By the end of the script that we crafted and worked so hard to make right for you after four years, I was crying. I couldn't hold it back, and I had to tell everyone. And my sister said, 'No more crying, bro.' So I just want to say that sometimes, even the toughest guys in the world need to cry."

The Fast and Furious franchise has been one of the most commercially successful action series in Hollywood history. Fast X, which set up the story threads that Fast Forever will resolve, was released in 2023. The gap between the two films will be nearly five years by the time the finale hits theaters.

Diesel's comments suggest the production timeline is still somewhat contingent on logistics, with the actor noting filming would begin in December "if" he can fulfill the studio's request. No cast announcements beyond Diesel's own involvement have been made public at this time.
