Apple TV’s streaming service has made a strong showing at the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards, securing eight major prizes including six for the comedy series Widow’s Bay and two for Pluribus. This brings Apple TV’s total Emmy count for the year to 28, after earlier winning 20 Creative Arts Emmys. The platform beat out long-standing rivals HBO and Netflix, which took home five and three Primetime Emmys respectively.
Widow’s Bay was the standout winner, earning awards for best comedy series, lead actor in a comedy series, supporting actor and actress, outstanding writing, and outstanding directing. Across the Primetime and Creative Arts ceremonies, Widow’s Bay won 14 Emmys from 19 nominations. The total set a record for the most Emmys won by a comedy series in a single year.
Matthew Rhys made history by becoming the first person to win two lead acting Emmys in the same year. Rhys took home the best lead actor in a comedy series award for his role in Widow’s Bay and later won again for a limited or anthology series category for Netflix's The Beast in Me. Combined with his 2018 drama Emmy for The Americans, Rhys became the first performer to win lead acting Emmys in drama, comedy and limited-series categories.
HBO also had strong performances with The Pitt winning best drama series and lead actor Noah Wyle taking home the award for his role. The Pitt won the drama series award for the second year in a row.
Netflix picked up wins as well, with Allison Janney earning best supporting actress in The Diplomat and Sally Field winning lead actress in a limited or anthology series for Remarkably Bright Creatures. Janney's win was her eighth career acting Emmy. Field also became the oldest winner of the lead actress award in the limited or anthology series or movie category.
Apple TV’s success marks a major shift in the prestige television landscape, as it has now outpaced HBO after only seven years of operation, according to Engadget. The streaming service’s growing influence was further highlighted by its strong performance across multiple genres and award categories. Widow’s Bay’s wins were especially notable given the series’ mix of comedy and horror elements, which helped it stand out among other nominees.
Pluribus also earned two Primetime Emmys, with Rhea Seehorn winning outstanding lead actress in a drama series and Vince Gilligan winning outstanding writing for a drama series. Pluribus won six Emmys overall when its four Creative Arts victories are included.
Seehorn’s victory was her first Emmy. She won for her performance as Carol Sturka in Pluribus after previously receiving Emmy nominations for Better Call Saul and Cooper’s Bar.
The awards night showcased a competitive field with many top contenders, but Apple TV’s consistent presence across multiple award categories proved decisive. In addition to the Primetime Emmys, Apple TV also claimed 20 Creative Arts Emmy awards earlier in the year. The company finished the 2026 Emmy season with 28 awards.
This success reflects a broader trend toward streaming platforms challenging traditional networks for prestige television honors.
