Rockstar Games is preparing to release Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026, while employees in the United Kingdom prepare for a major union recognition vote. The vote will take place from November 12 through November 26, overlapping with the launch of one of the most anticipated video games in years.

The vote involves the Rockstar Game Workers Union, which is affiliated with the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB). If employees approve recognition, the organization could become the largest formally recognized union in the UK's video game industry.

The company is also involved in an employment tribunal concerning the dismissal of 31 workers in October 2025. The union alleges that the employees were targeted for organizing activities, while Rockstar maintains that the dismissals resulted from misconduct involving confidential company information.

Rockstar Workers Prepare for November Union Vote

The upcoming ballot will allow eligible Rockstar employees in the UK to decide whether the company should formally recognize the union for collective bargaining.

The Rockstar Game Workers Union was publicly announced in May 2026 and represents an organizing effort across the company's UK operations.

According to industry publication Game Developer, the recognition campaign focuses on several workplace issues, including pay, overtime, job security, flexible working arrangements and the use of generative artificial intelligence.

Union representatives argue that formal recognition would give workers a stronger voice in decisions affecting their employment. Recognition could establish a process for negotiating employment conditions with management.

The union has been seeking an agreement with Rockstar through discussions that began earlier this year. Workers reportedly held meetings with company representatives beginning in July to discuss possible recognition arrangements.

The decision to hold a formal vote follows those discussions.

The timing is particularly notable because Rockstar employees will cast their ballots before, during and after the November 19 release of GTA VI.

A successful ballot would represent a significant development for union organization in the British video game industry. However, the outcome is not guaranteed, and recognition will depend on the applicable voting requirements.

Employment Tribunal Examines 2025 Dismissals

The recognition vote is taking place alongside a separate legal dispute involving former Rockstar employees.

In October 2025, Rockstar dismissed 31 workers who had been involved in or connected to union organizing efforts.

The IWGB challenged the dismissals, alleging that the company unlawfully targeted employees because of their union activities.

Rockstar has rejected that accusation.

The company maintains that the workers were dismissed for gross misconduct rather than participation in union organizing. Its position is that employees improperly shared confidential company information through an external communications channel.

The union disputes Rockstar's explanation and argues that the dismissals were connected to protected organizing activities.

The case has progressed through an employment tribunal in Glasgow, Scotland.

The IWGB previously announced that a final hearing would begin September 10 and continue through October 16. The proceedings have since been extended, with closing submissions now expected on November 17 and 18.

Those dates place the final arguments immediately before the scheduled release of Grand Theft Auto VI.

The tribunal will consider the evidence and legal arguments presented by both sides. No final ruling establishing unlawful dismissals has been confirmed.

The distinction matters because the union's allegations remain contested. The existence of a tribunal proceeding does not establish that Rockstar violated employment law.

Rockstar Leadership Responds to Union Organizing

Despite the ongoing dispute, Rockstar executives have publicly indicated that they would accept employees' decision concerning union representation.

In a Bloomberg interview referenced by Engadget, Rockstar head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe addressed the organizing campaign.

"We go where the team goes," Kolbe said. "So if they want a union, they will have a union."

Her comments suggest that management is prepared to respond to the outcome of the recognition process.

However, the statement does not settle the separate legal dispute involving the former employees.

The union recognition vote and the employment tribunal involve different questions. One concerns whether current workers will have formal collective representation, while the other addresses whether previous dismissals complied with employment law.

The results could have implications beyond Rockstar, particularly for developers considering similar organizing campaigns at other video game companies.

GTA 6 Remains Scheduled for November 19

Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will launch on Thursday, November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The game returns players to Vice City and introduces the fictional state of Leonida, a setting inspired by Florida.

Its story follows Jason and Lucia, two central characters whose involvement in criminal activity leads them into a wider conspiracy.

Rockstar originally planned to release the game earlier, but announced in November 2025 that it was moving the launch to November 19, 2026.

The company said the additional development time would allow it to improve the finished game.

Preorders opened in June 2026. The standard edition is priced at $79.99 in the United States, while the Ultimate Edition costs $99.99.

Rockstar has also confirmed that players who preorder digital editions can begin downloading the game on November 12, one week before launch.

The physical retail edition will contain a digital download code rather than a game disc, meaning those buyers will also need to download the game.

GTA 6 Reportedly Requires a 210GB Download

Another issue attracting attention is the game's potentially enormous download size.

On October 27, the PlayStation Game Size account reported that the PlayStation 5 version of Grand Theft Auto VI would require a 210GB download.

The account is known for examining information associated with PlayStation Store releases. Insider Gaming and several other gaming publications reported the figure.

However, Rockstar has not officially confirmed the 210GB size.

The reported number also refers to a download rather than a verified final installation requirement. The amount of free storage needed during installation could differ.

For comparison, Red Dead Redemption 2 required approximately 149GB of available space for installation on PlayStation 4 when it launched in 2018, according to IGN.

If the reported 210GB figure proves accurate, GTA VI would require considerably more storage.

That could present difficulties for players who have already filled much of their consoles' internal storage with other games.

The standard 512GB Xbox Series S, for example, provides considerably less usable space than its advertised capacity. A download approaching 210GB would occupy a substantial portion of that storage.

It is not yet clear whether the Xbox versions will require the same amount of space as the reported PlayStation 5 download.

Players should therefore treat the 210GB figure as preliminary until Rockstar or the console platform operators provide official installation details.

November Brings Two Major Decisions for Rockstar

The union ballot and employment tribunal are approaching at a particularly important moment for Rockstar Games.

The company is preparing to release a major new installment in a franchise that has helped define open-world video games for more than two decades.

At the same time, its UK employees are seeking formal representation on workplace issues that could influence future employment arrangements.

The union vote begins November 12, the same day GTA VI preloading becomes available. Tribunal closing arguments are expected November 17 and 18, followed by the game's November 19 launch.

Voting will continue through November 26, meaning the recognition process will remain active after the game reaches players.

The tribunal's eventual ruling and the results of the recognition ballot will determine the next stages of Rockstar's labor dispute. Neither outcome has been established as of October 27, 2026.
