Canadian pop artist Carly Rae Jepsen has unveiled her latest studio effort, a double album titled Day and Night. The release includes twenty-four songs and runs about 85 minutes. Interscope released the album on September 18.
Jepsen began hinting at the new project in June, sharing postcard-style messages on social media. These messages featured lyrics, locations, and timestamps, building anticipation for the release. She began posting the postcard-style images twice a day in June after her website had already started playing snippets of music connected with the project.
The album explores a wide range of musical styles and emotional themes, according to Pitchfork. The Day half includes psychedelic pop, folk and disco influences while Night moves more heavily into synth-pop and dance music. Love and heartbreak are central topics, though they appear more sparingly in the second half of the record. Songs like 'Wild Child' and 'Good Fine Alright' address the pain that comes with romantic endings. Jepsen also reflects on her personal journey, including her identity and family background. One track, 'Motivation,' specifically examines what she inherits from her family.
The album was created during a significant period in Jepsen’s life that included marriage and her pregnancy with her first child. Jepsen married producer Cole M.G.N. in October 2025 and gave birth to their son Ilya in March 2026. She was pregnant while portions of the album and its videos were being completed.
The music video for 'After All' shows Jepsen dancing in an apartment while pregnant, ending with her falling into the arms of a lover. Jepsen told Apple Music that she wrote the song before she was engaged and before she had a baby. By the time the video was filmed she was married and nine months pregnant.
Pitchfork described Day and Night as one of Jepsen’s most wide-ranging and exploratory works, especially considering her recent life changes. The review compared the uncertainty of artistic experimentation with making a lifelong commitment and bringing new life into the world.
The first single from the album, 'On Wires,' was co-written with Nate Cyphert and Kyle Shearer. Shearer also produced the track. Jepsen said the song represented the excitement of finding something she had not done before. “On Wires” was released on June 26 as the lead single.
Jepsen’s approach to music is consistent with her reputation for hard work and dedication. She rose to fame with the hit 'Call Me Maybe' in 2012, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for nine weeks. The song became one of the defining pop hits of 2012 and helped Jepsen gain an international audience.
The album also includes a song inspired by Sofia Coppola’s film Marie Antoinette, Rolling Stone reported. That track, 'Versailles,' was filmed in Los Angeles and directed by Kanya Iwana. In the video, Jepsen dances at a party while imagining herself in Versailles. She wrote the song with Elias Kapari, Noonie Bao and Markus Krunegård.
The album follows her 2023 release, The Loveliest Time. That record was a companion to 2022's The Loneliest Time. Day and Night differs from those releases by presenting its two contrasting halves together as one double album.
Jepsen also announced she will work on a Broadway musical adaptation of 10 Things I Hate About You. She will collaborate with Grammy winner Ethan Gruska to compose the show’s songs and lyrics. Lena Dunham and Jessica Huang are writing the book while Christopher Wheeldon is directing and choreographing. A production timeline had not been announced when the project was first revealed.
Jepsen recently welcomed a baby boy named Ilya with her husband. Vogue reported that motherhood and marriage were major parts of the period in which she developed Day and Night.
Jepsen said she had long wanted to explore two distinctly different sounds on the same project and felt this was the opportunity to do it. The Day side uses more organic instrumentation while Night moves toward darker and more electronic dance music.
The release of Day and Night marks a major milestone in her artistic evolution. It’s a deeply personal work, shaped by her new role as a mother and the emotional journey of her marriage.
