Mike McMahan, the creator of the sci-fi comedy Solar Opposites, has suggested that the show may not be finished despite its recent conclusion. The series, which was co-created by McMahan and Justin Roiland, followed a family of aliens from Planet Shlorp as they adapted to life on Earth. Roiland originally voiced Korvo before Dan Stevens took over the role beginning with season four.
These alien characters were tasked with terraforming the planet using their infant-like Pupa companion, but over time, the family members began questioning their mission. Hulu describes the Pupa as a living supercomputer that was expected eventually to consume the family and terraform Earth.
The show received strong praise from critics and had solid viewership numbers, even setting a record for Hulu's most-watched original comedy premiere. Hulu said after its 2020 debut that Solar Opposites had become its most-watched original comedy premiere to that point. More than 40% of viewers who started the first season watched all eight episodes within two days.
After five seasons, Hulu confirmed that the series would end with season six, though the finale received mixed reactions from fans. Season six was released on October 13, 2025. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists an 83% critics score and a 77% audience score for the final season.
In interviews, McMahan expressed his excitement about the possibility of bringing back the series. He has said that the end of the show does not have to mean the end of the characters or their stories. McMahan said the writers already know what another season could look like.
McMahan defended the ending of the series and said the writers intentionally left room for more adventures. Before the final season was released, he described it as the end of the first chapter rather than a completely closed story.
Season six aimed to wrap up many storylines for the characters, including the mission of terraforming Earth and the journey of The Wall. The final season also brought the Wall, SilverCops and the main Solar Opposites storyline together. McMahan said the writers had been building toward those connections for years.
In the final Wall storyline, Cherie and the others finally reached Yumyulack and forced him to agree to make them normal size again. They then learned that Pezlie could not safely be enlarged because she had been born small and changing her size could kill her. Cherie and several of her allies decided to remain small so Pezlie would not grow up alone. They also decided not to tell the rest of the Wall the full truth.
The family’s former neighbor-turned-galactic-hero Glen also played an important role in the final season. His SilverCops storyline was brought back into the larger story involving the Shlorpians. McMahan said the SilverCops story reached a planned resolution while still leaving room for future adventures.
However, the series’ finale also raised questions about what happens in the future of Earth, with a flash-forward showing its destruction 90 years later. The scene shows the Solar Opposites dead aboard their ship while descendants of the Wall survivors struggle to survive. The show does not fully explain what caused Earth's destruction.
The flash-forward was connected to Cherie's decision to keep the Wall population small. McMahan later explained that the scene was meant to show that decisions made with good intentions can still have unintended consequences. He also said the writers already have ideas about where that storyline could go if the series returns.
The final season’s conclusion received mixed responses. Some viewers criticized the Wall ending and the unexplained flash-forward while others praised the final season for leaving room for more stories. Rotten Tomatoes lists both positive and negative critical reviews of season six.
Despite this, Solar Opposites had been a success for Hulu, including receiving four holiday specials during its run. Disney+ lists a Christmas special, two Halloween specials and a Valentine's Day special.
McMahan is no longer splitting his time between Solar Opposites and Star Trek: Lower Decks after both series ended. Lower Decks completed its run in 2024 while Solar Opposites ended the following year. McMahan has since moved on to other projects while continuing to say that he would welcome another chance to make Solar Opposites.
He is also developing another animated science-fiction comedy. Prime Video ordered Odd Jobs, which McMahan is creating with Solar Opposites producer Dominic Dierkes. The series is set in the future and follows gig workers taking dangerous assignments through an app.
The creator’s comments suggest that fans might see more from the characters in the future if a streaming service decides to continue the series. McMahan told Animation World Network that he would love to do more Solar Opposites if another opportunity appears.
The show's ending was not without controversy, but its popularity and strong fan following leave open the possibility for a revival. The series began in 2020 and ran for six seasons and 63 episodes.
The series' finale brought closure for some storylines while leaving others open-ended, which has sparked debate among viewers about how the show should have ended. The Wall's future and the destruction of Earth are among the largest unanswered questions.
