A debate between two Senate candidates in Maine brought sharp criticism and political tension to the stage. The race is one of the most closely watched contests in November's election with control of the Senate at stake. Although Maine has leaned toward Democrats in recent decades Senator Collins has managed to win re-election despite strong opposition.

During the debate Collins was asked about President Trump possibly campaigning in Maine according to CBS News. She said she had not heard from his office and that she was not one of Trump's favorite senators. Jackson criticized Collins for supporting the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

This vote was seen as a key moment in the court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Collins said she disagreed with the outcome of that decision but noted her opponent's past opposition to abortion rights. She also referenced her record on limiting the president’s ability to start a war with Iran.

She said the war was poorly planned and had negative effects on global energy markets. Both candidates expressed strong disapproval of President Trump’s tariffs on Canada. They also criticized the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a man was fatally shot by an ICE officer in Maine.

Jackson said ICE should be disbanded while Collins called for reforms to the agency. Jackson had previously served as Maine Senate president and had run for governor. He was later chosen as the Democratic Senate candidate after Graham Platner withdrew following allegations of sexual misconduct that he has denied.

Collins took issue with Jackson's record in state politics. The debate highlighted deep divisions between the two candidates on several key issues. Economic concerns were also a major focus of the campaign with many voters expressing dissatisfaction with current conditions according to a report from the BBC.

A survey showed that most Americans believe the economy is getting worse. The cost of living has become a top issue for many voters with prices rising across the board. Republican candidates are trying to avoid appearing too aligned with President Trump especially as the election approaches.

One such candidate is Congressman Byron Donalds of Florida who did not mention Trump in a recent campaign speech. Some Republican candidates in competitive races have also called for ending the war with Iran. The country has seen nearly two years of Republican control over the federal government from the White House to both chambers of Congress.

The upcoming election is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent memory.
