The FBI is investigating a series of deaths and disappearances involving scientists who worked at nuclear and space technology laboratories. The cases have drawn federal scrutiny, though the bureau has not publicly disclosed how many individuals are involved or whether the incidents are believed to be connected.

Victor Wembanyama won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award during the 2025-26 season, becoming both the youngest recipient and the first player ever to win the honor unanimously.

The San Antonio Spurs center is now the only player in NBA history to win multiple regular-season awards by unanimous vote, having also earned the 2024 Rookie of the Year award without a single dissenting ballot.

Wembanyama, 21, was born January 4, 2004, in France and was selected first overall by San Antonio in the 2023 NBA draft. His rookie season alone reshaped expectations for what a first-year player could do defensively. He led the league in blocks per game, was named to the All-Defensive First Team as both the first rookie and youngest player ever to receive that recognition, and finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting that year behind French compatriot Rudy Gobert.

His path to the NBA ran through the French professional league, the LNB Pro A, where he began playing at 15 for Nanterre 92. He later moved to ASVEL, winning a Pro A title, then signed with Metropolitans 92 for the 2022-23 season. That year he became the youngest player to win the Pro A MVP award, led the league in scoring, rebounds and blocks, and took home Best Defender honors as well.

Internationally, Wembanyama has represented France at multiple levels. He set a FIBA record for blocks per game in a single tournament at the 2021 Under-19 World Cup and won a silver medal with the senior national team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Standing at an unusual combination of height, wingspan and agility, Wembanyama drew comparisons to no previous player when he entered the draft. Scouts and executives described him as a generational prospect, and his early NBA results have sustained that assessment.

The Defensive Player of the Year award has been given annually since 1983. Previous winners include Gobert, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Dikembe Mutombo, none of whom won it unanimously.

The scientists worked at facilities tied to some of the most sensitive areas of American research. Nuclear and space technology labs operate at the intersection of national security and scientific development, making the welfare of their personnel a matter that extends beyond ordinary law enforcement concerns.

The FBI declined to provide detailed information about the scope of the investigation. It is not yet known whether the deaths are being treated as suspicious, accidental, or potentially linked to any broader threat. The disappearances add a separate layer of complexity to what the bureau is examining.

Cases involving researchers at classified or sensitive facilities carry particular weight. Scientists with access to restricted technology or proprietary research are, in some circumstances, considered targets for foreign intelligence operations. The FBI routinely investigates counterintelligence threats at research institutions, though the agency has not publicly framed these cases in that context.

No suspects have been named. No charges have been filed. The investigation remains ongoing, according to CBS News, with federal agents working to determine the circumstances surrounding each case.
