A second division club from a town 25 miles north of Lisbon won the Portuguese Cup on Sunday, beating 18-time winners Sporting in extra time.
Torreense, who play in a stadium that holds roughly 2,500 spectators, took the lead through Kevin Zohi after just three minutes. Sporting equalized through Luis Suarez at the start of the second half. The match went to extra time, where Sporting's Uruguayan left-back Maximiliano Araujo was sent off after conceding a penalty. Cape Verde defender Stopira scored from the spot to win it.
According to BBC Sport, it is the first major trophy in Torreense's 109-year history. The club had reached the Portuguese Cup final only once before, losing to Porto in 1956.
The win carries immediate consequences. Torreense will play in the Europa League next season, a competition that would have seemed unimaginable for a side at their level. They also remain in contention for promotion to the top flight. The second leg of their league play-off against Casa Pia is Thursday, with the first match finishing 0-0.
Sporting, who won the league and cup double last season, finished second in the league this year and now lose the cup as well.
