Nearly five years after Ridley Scott announced plans for a television spinoff of his 1982 science fiction film, the first look at Blade Runner 2099 arrived at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday.
Prime Video debuted the teaser for the ten-episode series at the convention. Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer, who star in the show, joined showrunner Silka Luisa onstage for the reveal. The audience also saw an exclusive clip not included in the public teaser.
According to Ars Technica, the series is set fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049. In this version of Los Angeles, humanity lost an uprising against Replicants. Humans are now the hunted, living as second-class citizens in a city rebuilt without them at the center.
Yeoh plays Olwen, a Replicant who is days away from dying. Schafer plays Cora, a fugitive who takes on the identity of a Blade Runner in what she frames as one last job. The two are forced to work together, hunting a runaway who carries information that could destabilize what remains of the city.
The cast also includes Hugo Hamlet as Buster Friendly, along with Dmitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Matthew Needham, Tom Burke, and Maurizio Lombardi, all in roles that have not yet been publicly described.
Luisa, who previously ran Shining Girls for Apple TV+, told Entertainment Weekly that the series stays true to the original's "noir principles… and there's a mystery at the heart of the show that looks both forwards and backwards in terms of mythology." She described the show's central question directly. "The show is really imagining what comes after us, and what does it mean to be human in a world where humanity is no longer relevant," said Luisa.
At the same SDCC panel, Prime Video also released a teaser for the third season of The Rings of Power, which showed Sauron, played by Charlie Vickers, forging the One Ring.
Blade Runner 2099 premieres November 25, 2026, on Prime Video.
