EEHV is the leading cause of death among young Asian elephants living in zoos and managed facilities. The virus causes a hemorrhagic disease that can kill a calf within days of the first visible symptoms. Asian elephants are listed as endangered. Their total wild population is estimated between 40,000 and 50,000 individuals, and captive populations held by accredited institutions represent a genetic resource that conservation programs depend on. The virus itself has been difficult to study because it cannot be grown in a standard laboratory cell culture, which is the usual first step in developing a vaccine.
