Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana endorsed Todd Blanche for attorney general on Friday, giving President Trump's former personal lawyer what appears to be a clear path to confirmation as the nation's top law enforcement official.

According to CBS News, Cassidy's endorsement puts Blanche one step closer to the role. The Washington Post reported that Blanche had also rescinded a fund for Trump allies after Republican senators threatened to block his attorney general bid, a move that appeared to ease concerns among holdouts within the party.

Blanche had faced resistance from some GOP senators before Cassidy announced his support. With Cassidy now on board, Blanche appears to have the votes needed for Senate confirmation.

Blanche served as a personal attorney for Trump and has been a prominent figure in Republican legal circles. His nomination to lead the Justice Department drew scrutiny from some members of his own party, leading to the standoff over the fund before his confirmation appeared to get back on track.

No confirmation vote date has been publicly announced.
