Sword Health, a digital health company known for its musculoskeletal therapy platform, has acquired Headspace, the meditation and mental wellness app, in a move that significantly expands its presence in the digital mental health market, according to a report by Citeline.
The deal brings together two companies with different but complementary user bases. Sword Health has built its business around using artificial intelligence and physical therapy to treat pain conditions remotely. Headspace has focused on mindfulness, meditation, and general mental wellness, building a consumer audience and a separate business-to-business arm that sells subscriptions through employers.
The combined company would cover a broader range of mental health and physical health needs through a single digital platform. For Sword Health, the acquisition represents a substantial expansion beyond its original focus on musculoskeletal conditions into broader behavioral and mental health services.
Headspace has gone through significant changes in recent years. It previously merged with Ginger, a mental health coaching and therapy platform, and rebranded as Headspace Health before returning to the Headspace name. The company built up an enterprise client base, selling mental wellness benefits to large employers.
Separately, CoStar reported that a digital health company signed a deal to more than double its San Francisco headquarters, a move that signals growth expectations in the sector. San Francisco has remained a hub for digital health companies despite broader shifts in the commercial real estate market.
The Sword Health and Headspace deal reflects continued consolidation in the digital mental health space, where a wave of startups that expanded rapidly during the pandemic has been narrowing through mergers and acquisitions as the market matures.
Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The combined company's leadership structure and how the two platforms will be integrated have not been fully detailed publicly.
