Hideo Kojima's upcoming action-espionage game Physint will now be published by Xbox instead of PlayStation. The decision follows Sony’s removal of the project from its development plans in June, a move that surprised many in the gaming industry. Kojima Productions had been working on Physint since early 2024, when it was first revealed to the public with great fanfare. At that time, the game was presented alongside a video that featured Kojima and PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst. The presentation included a reveal from Columbia Pictures, suggesting the project could lead to movies or other media properties.

However, Sony’s sudden decision to pull support for Physint has thrown the project into uncertainty, according to Engadget. In a statement posted on X, Sony said it had made the difficult choice to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on Physint. Sony also said its relationship with Kojima remains strong after decades of collaboration and that it hopes to work with him again.

Just moments after that announcement, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirmed that her company would take over publishing duties for the title. She referenced a previous collaboration between Kojima and Xbox, calling it a proud moment in their shared history. That existing collaboration is OD, the horror project Kojima Productions has already been developing with Xbox.

Kojima himself responded to the news with an X post confirming the details of the switch. He said that he was surprised by Sony’s decision and that Physint was important both personally and for his company. Kojima added that he and his team had spent the last three months searching for a new publisher to keep the project moving forward. He said Kojima Productions found in Xbox a company that shared its vision for the future.

The situation raises questions about what went wrong during development, especially since Sony’s decision could have caused negative reactions from fans and Kojima himself. Kojima Productions had been working on Physint for over a year before the announcement. The game was expected to be a major title in Kojima’s career and one that could have led to further projects beyond video games.

Sony has not publicly explained a specific problem with the project. Its statement said only that the decision came after careful consideration. Kojima also did not identify a technical, financial or creative dispute that led to Sony's decision.

Now, with Xbox stepping in as the new publisher, it remains unclear whether Physint will be released on PlayStation or other platforms. Kojima also mentioned that he is open to future collaborations with Xbox, suggesting that this may not be the last time the two companies work together.

The Xbox partnership is already moving beyond Physint. Xbox said it and Kojima Productions plan to collaborate across film and television as well as video games. That expands a relationship that began with OD and could give Kojima Productions another path for the type of cross-media projects it has been pursuing.

The sudden shift in publisher status has left many fans and analysts wondering about the internal dynamics between Kojima, Sony, and Xbox. It also highlights how quickly decisions can change in the video game industry, especially when it involves high-profile creators like Hideo Kojima.

The announcement of Physint’s new publisher comes at a time when many are watching closely to see how the project will develop. Kojima has long been known for his unique storytelling and creative vision in video games, especially in the Metal Gear series. His work on Physint was expected to bring a new kind of experience to players, blending action with espionage themes.

Kojima revealed more about Physint during Kojima Productions' 10th anniversary event in 2025. Actors Charlee Fraser, Ma Dong-seok and Minami Hamabe were announced as members of the cast. Kojima described the project as a next-stage tactical espionage action game.

At that time, Kojima said Physint was still roughly five or six years away. That estimate suggested the game could arrive around 2030 or 2031, although no official release year has been announced.

The game’s future now depends on how well Xbox can support its development and what direction it takes in the coming months. Fans are hopeful that Physint will still be released as planned, with a new publisher backing it.

With the involvement of Xbox and Kojima’s continued interest, there is still optimism about what lies ahead for this project. The game’s development timeline remains unclear, but it is clear that Kojima and his team are determined to see Physint through to completion.

Kojima Productions said development is continuing despite the publisher change. Xbox has also said it will provide more information as development progresses.

Whether or not the game will be released on PlayStation or other platforms remains to be seen.
