At BlizzCon, Blizzard Entertainment made a major announcement for the Diablo franchise. The company confirmed that Diablo V is in development and will release in spring 2029. Diablo IV launched in 2023, putting about six years between the two numbered games if Diablo V arrives as scheduled. The Diablo V teaser showed a fallen Sanctuary where Diablo has already won. Blizzard said the heroes are gone and players will enter a world where Diablo has already taken control.
Blizzard also announced an animated Diablo series coming to Netflix, according to Engadget. Details about the show remain limited, including its release date and animation studio. The animated version is part of a broader push by Blizzard to expand the franchise beyond games. Blizzard President Johanna Faries also indicated that the company is exploring adaptations involving the Overwatch and Warcraft universes.
Diablo V will continue the story after events in Diablo IV, taking players into deeper darkness. PC Gamer reported that the new game takes place about a century after Diablo IV. In addition to the new game and show, Blizzard revealed more content for other franchises at BlizzCon, according to a report from CNET. For Diablo IV, a new Amazon class pack is coming in the first half of 2027. The javelin-wielding Amazon will bring the classic character type back to the series.
The Skovos islands are not being introduced by the Amazon pack. Skovos was introduced earlier in 2026 through Diablo IV's Lord of Hatred expansion. The expansion launched in April and includes a campaign set in the ancient region of Skovos.
World of Warcraft is also getting a new version called World of Warcraft: Forever, with a beta opening September 17. The game will launch November 4, while Warcraft III Reforged has received a separate new campaign called Forsaken Kingdom. Blizzard said Forever is a third World of Warcraft experience alongside Modern and Classic. It will include three new zones, more than 1,000 quests, nine dungeons, two raids and the new Skyborne race.
Overwatch received some updates too, including reworks for Roadhog and Sombra. A new support hero named Doctrine is also joining the roster in October. Doctrine is a vampire-inspired support hero who uses bat-like drones. Sombra is also being moved into a support role.
Hearthstone is preparing for a new expansion called Reign of the Black Empire. The game will introduce a new 'assemble' keyword and a Journey feature for events. A new Monk class is also coming in March 2027, becoming the game's first new playable class in six years. Reign of the Black Empire is scheduled for release on October 20.
